This idea involves the application of a system which is responsible for the collection of used plastic containers, sterilizes them and delivers them back to the factories to be refilled.
91% of all plastic cannot be recycled, and therefore hundreds of tonnes of waste is either burnt contaminating our air (our lungs) or dumped in landfills or in our seas (contaminating the animal kingdom, marine life, and human wellbeing!).
The proposal involves a new handling system for plastic waste. It would be accompanied by some parallel actions, like public awareness on the life cycle of plastic waste and campaigns towards achieving citizen collaboration for the delivery of plastic containers to specific sites (perhaps in every neighbourhood) so that they can be washed and sterilised, and delivered back to the factories to be refilled with the product and sold again.
There's absolutely no reason why companies should produce NEW plastic for perfectly fine containers that we already have at home and are commonly used. This suggestion does not save the problem of recycling altogether but it's a great step for Cyprus to start moving towards a more conscious attitude around reusing and unburdening the environment from excess waste. At least a certain category of plastic will be decreased significantly in terms of production and dumping in our already damaged and vulnerable earth.
