Creation of eco-communities in Cyprus

We are a group of people with the common vision of creating eco-communities on our island. The idea has been around for a long time now and we hope that it will be implemented with the help of this program and with the support of the people. The facts show that now is the time.

Lately we have been experiencing a health crisis that has quickly turned into an economic one, with ominous consequences in our lives, all against the backdrop of a climate crisis. It was a powerful shock to everyone personally and to the society as a whole, but also an opportunity. It appeared as a wake-up call.

The current system is once again proven to be wrong. Overconsumption, the free market economy and the dominance of financial capital combined with economic globalization have favored and continue to favor a minority of people and at the same time degrade the lives of the vast majority of people. The inequality gap is widening and causing huge waves of migrants from poor to economically developed countries.

At a time when knowledge and technology development are at their peak, the reckless waste of means and resources has caused us to lose our balance. The changes brought to the Earth due to overconsumption have caused enormous damage to ecosystems.

Should we change our lifestyle?

We need to remember our true nature, rethink our relationship with the ecosystem and adopt a lifestyle that meets our real needs with as little social and ecological footprint as possible.

So our vision is to create eco-communities that will act as powerful alternative sustainable development tools. There are thousands of eco-communities around the world that host a respectable number of people. However, in Cyprus this is something completely new. It is an effort that will bring to the forefront a forgotten meaning, which can be the model for a sustainable future. That is, a pilot project where some people will have the opportunity to try to live in a community with a different, simple and comprehensive lifestyle. This model will set an example for an alternative lifestyle and will give choice to a large portion of the population who want to change their lifestyle, but canot find a way to make a start, because it is something that requires collectivity and common principles.

The objectives of this model are:

  • Decentralization
  • Small productive units
  • Cultivating a sense of community, mutual aid and trust (better life)
  • Social integration
  • Lighter footprint on the planet
  • Self-sufficiency
  • Independence
  • Lifelong employment
  • Sustainability

Our effort is to support a group of people in order to create a community, not necessarily from scratch, but to move to a small village, to existing homes. There they will be able to secure a piece of land to cultivate it together, to work together and to socialize with the ultimate goal of maximizing their detoxification from the existing system. In the future, the infrastructure can be created for their full relocation to the specific area. In short, a gradual creation of an eco-village.

These eco-communities will be based on:

  •   "Green" infrastructure capital.
  •   Autonomous ecological housing
  •   Renewable energy resources.
  •   Permaculture
  •   Various forms of supportive community and community practices
  • The main purpose of many eco-communities is to set an example of a viable settlement, i.e. to produce there and on a permanent basis the majorty of the things that they will need

The organization of the eco-community will be based on the following principles:

  •     Development of the regional economy and the recycling of the raw materials of the region.
  •     Local production and distribution of food.
  •      Restriction of overconsumption of goods.
  •      Consensual decision making.
  •      Respect towards diversity

We ask for your support and your vote. Now is the time to unite in order to make the change we dream of. For a better world and a more prosperous future which future generations will also be able to enjoy.
